A Stroke of Midnight by Laurell K. Hamilton
Well, I finished book #4 of the Meredith Gentry series last night. It is titled A Stroke of Midnight.
I have to say, overall I was disappointed with this book. I really, really wanted to like it, but it was mediocre at the best. Basically, it was the same plot line as books 2 and 3, with very little plot advancement. It's just more of Meredith having sex with new (and old) partners, and each time she has sex something mystical and magical happens that no one has seen in thousands of years. Then they all have to be terrified about whether or not the Queen is going to be happy about the new developments or torture them to death. Don't get me wrong - it's all beautifully written and extremely easy to read, but it just feels like the book is on repeat. I'm ready for some of the major plot lines to grow. For instance: Merry is still not pregnant, she still hasn't found her King and had to marry, Prince Cel is still locked up in the torture chamber for his punishment, Merry still hasn't had to face her uncle the King of the Seelie Court, and so on. I'm really hoping that book 5 will pick up the pace a little bit, because if it doesn't then it's gonna be a real struggle for me to finish this series. No matter how bad it gets, I will finish it though because I'm too OCD to stop a series once I start it, lol. So I'm really rooting for Hamilton to turn this one around. Merry is a really good character, and I'm still in her corner, so there is still hope. I'll let you know how it all turns out! ;) But sadly, I have to give this book 2 out of 4 stars.
