Spotlight on: Blood Hunters Series by Marie Treanor

Blood Hunters
a sequel series to the
Awakened by Blood trilogy

Blood Hunters, Book 1

Natural enemies, deadly attraction...

Mihaela, a fearless vampire hunter secretly haunted by loneliness and childhood tragedy, finds it difficult to adjust to the new world order where vampires are not always the bad guys. She's taking a much needed vacation in Scotland when she sees a little boy being chased through the streets of Edinburgh. Rescuing him brings bigger problems - two vampires from her past: Gavril, who killed her family; and the reclusive and troubled Maximilian, gifted Renaissance artist and one-time overlord of the most powerful undead community in the world. Maximilian once saved her life and now needs that favor returned.

The earth moves for Mihaela in more ways than one. From Scotland to Budapest and Malta, she  races against time to prevent a disastrous, vampire-induced earthquake and save an innocent yet powerful child – all while fighting a dreadful attraction to Maximilian, her only ally, whom she can’t afford to trust. For Maximilian, the hunter becomes a symbol of renewed existence, as he struggles to accept his past and rediscovers his appetite for blood and sex - and maybe even happiness.

Blood Hunters, Book 2

Obsession... a wounded hunter, a damaged vampire

Six months ago, vampire hunter and inventive genius Istvan nearly died in the seminal battle that would change the relationship between humans and vampires forever.

A year before that, he first encountered sexy vampiress, Angyalka, owner of the Angel Club, favored haunt of the undead. Istvan won that round, but when he recklessly seeks her out again in search of the secret of angels, he's alone and so exhausted he can barely stand, let alone fight vampires. Plus Angyalka's out for revenge, and very happy to use his powerful sexual attraction to her…

But Angyalka has her own secret weaknesses amd terrifying strengths even she doesn't understand. Their battle becomes one of wits and sex, but when someone bombs the club, they fight together to contain all the threats closing in on the Angel, from humans and vampires, including the sadistic killer who could just be dangerous enough to finally topple undead overlord Saloman.

As Istvan struggles to harness the mysterious power of angels, Angyalka needs a deeper strength to send away the fascinating hunter who delivers on all her deepest sensual desires and yet can't come to terms with her vampire nature.

A child is born...into the final showdown of Vampire and Hunter

The face of a killer, the heart of a lost child…

Konrad once led the legendary first team of Hungarian vampire hunters. Now, refusing to ally with the undead, he goes his own way, slaughtering vampires across the length and breadth of Europe.

The dying thoughts of one such vampire send Konrad to Britain in search of a dangerous instrument that  might be just what he needs in his obsessive war with undead overlord Saloman – a war he’s determined to win at any cost. The only being who can lead him to the instrument and its current, evil possessor, is sexy, mysterious, young Glaswegian vampire Maggie, who holds herself aloof from her own kind.

Maggie sees much more than Konrad’s anger and cruelty. She makes it her mission to reach beyond the horrors of his past and find the man he should have been. Difficult, when he threatens her heart as well as everything she believes in; and when her whole being clamors for his body and his blood.

While journalists circle, about to break the news of vampire existence on mainstream television, Elizabeth Silk labors to give birth to Saloman’s daughter: and Maggie plays a dangerous game that risks everyone for her belief in one troubled man.

My Blood Hunters – So Far! by Marie Treanor

With the publication of BLOOD DESCENT, the third of my Blood Hunters stories, I finally feel I have a series! I still have a few stories to tell in this world, but BLOOD DESCENT certainly marks a milestone, bringing several story arcs to a conclusion and completing my tales of the elite Hungarian “First Team” of vampire hunters, which I first wrote about in BLOOD ON SILK, the first of the Awakened by Blood trilogy - which is a prequel series to Blood Hunters!

Complicated? Of course not! I should say, though, that although it’s a sequel series, Blood Hunters should be able to stand alone. In the earlier Awakened by Blood trilogy, (BLOOD ON SILK, BLOOD SIN and BLOOD ETERNAL) my vampire hunters first appeared as the heroine Elizabeth’s mentors and friends. Towards the end of the trilogy I began to get distracted by those hunters, and as the story moved forward in my head, I realized the hunters were telling it. So, I decided to give them the opportunity to do so.

First up was the brave but unhappy Mihaela in BLOOD GUILT. Mihaela has a terrible tragedy in her past: as a child, she watched a vampire kill her parents. She was only saved by the same fighting spirit that makes her such a good hunter. I like Mihaela. She hides her loneliness and her natural desires for stability, a husband and family beneath unswerving duty. She’s strong, loyal, capable and humorous, and she never whines when life goes against her. She just fights back until she wins. She isn’t even afraid of death. What does frighten her is the temptation of her powerful physical desire for the vampire Maximilian…

Next, in BLOOD OF ANGELS, is Mihaela’s friend and colleague Istvan, the quiet, scientific hunter with the unexpected past. Istvan was a juvenile delinquent, a car thief and burglar until, while robbing a house, he came across vampires attacking the owner’s son and saved his life. Now Istvan is a dedicated and feared hunter, who’s dragged his profession into the technical age. While recovering from the vampire attack that nearly killed him in BLOOD ETERNAL, he sets about inventing his most ambitious gadget yet: an instrument for storing and magnifying the supernatural power of vampires. To learn what he needs, he soon finds himself embroiled in a battle of wits with sexy vampiress and nightclub owner, Angyalka – who is herself handicapped by agoraphobia!

And now at last there is also Konrad’s story in BLOOD DESCENT. Konrad is the most troubled hunter of all, part hero and part villain who can’t tolerate the new regime in which humans will gradually be persuaded to accept the existence of vampires. Konrad’s past is horrific, and he’s preparing to make an equally horrific mistake if he can’t be stopped. Konrad is tough, resolute, grim, the strongest of all vampire hunters, now on the run from his former colleagues and closest friends. He can’t shake off his old, personal loyalties, but it never enters his head that he might have inspired similar friendships in return. Beneath his hardness, he’s caring, lonely and vulnerable. And ironically, his only true ally in BLOOD DESCENT is a vampire - gorgeous Glaswegian Maggie (who made her first brief appearance in BLOOD ETERNAL, if you’re interested!)

So there you have the potted biographies of my first hunter team!  I have more to add. Please let me know in the comments which character intrigues you and why.

Blood Guilt (Blood Hunters, #1)Blood Guilt by Marie Treanor

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I have always been a fan of the age old tale that centers around vampires and vampire hunters. And if done the right way, it is a story that never gets old. I have to say that Marie Treanor has definitely succeeded in doing it the right way!

I really liked this book! I have not read the Awakened by Blood series which is a precedent to the Blood Hunters series. It is not necessary to read the first series to be able to enjoy Blood Guilt. There were a couple of circumstances that I'm sure I would have appreciated more or understood a little bit more fully had I read the first series, but Blood Guilt can certainly be read as a stand-alone book.

Mihaela and Maximilian are the requisite vampire hunter and vampire in this particular story. Mihaela is convincing in her role as the reticent vampire hunter that is having a hard time coming to grips with the so-called new world order that has vampire hunter and vampires working together under an uneasy sort of truce. Mihaela's parents and sister were murdered by a vampire who happens to pop up in this book as the villain with the evil plan, so of course she is fueled by a thirst for vengeance to kill him. Along the way she runs into Maximilian, the mysterious vampire who has been gracing her wet dreams ever since he saved her life on the battlefield months earlier. He becomes involved with her quest to kill the bad vampire and save the world, but in turn he becomes a danger to Mihaela's resolve to hate vampires - and to her heart.

The only reason that I didn't give this book 5-stars is because several of the plot lines felt too cliché. While they were very well written and entertaining, they didn't come across as original. For instance, the fact that Mihaela's family was murdered by vampires - thus causing her to eventually become a vampire hunter seems like a go-to-plot line. I would have liked to see a different reason for Mihaela's dislike of vampires and her need to hunt them. I just feel like this angle has been done to death in a vast number of paranormal books. Also, I don't think it's very believable that Mihaela would have given it up to Maximilian so easily - especially since her experience with vampires has been so negative and damaging. I don't think a pretty face that haunts her dreams, and a fascination with the vampire who saved her life would have been able to overcome her lifelong hatred and fear of vampires. However, I am glad that she got over it because DANG! Maximilian is hot! He is the perfect example of a sexy, mysterious, brooding vampire. The fact that he is powerful and flawed only adds to his appeal. Lastly, the bad vampire's evil plan to destroy most of humanity and take over the world closely resembles the villainous plot in most super hero movies. The fact that he is going to use a child to carry out his plan only adds to the comparison. So not only are Mihaela and Maximilian chasing the vampire so Mihaela can have her revenge for her family's murder, they are also saving an innocent child and the entire world! It seems like a bit much. And the whole "take over the world" scenario has been overused.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I can't wait to read books two and three in this series to see where the story goes next.
