Orphaned at 7, with no memory of her past or the family she lost, 17 year old Skye Martin is tired of being alone and afraid. After a hard night of partying, Skye wakes up alone in an unfamiliar hotel. All she can remember is the deep voice of her rescuer and his promise: “I am safe.”

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Never Let You Fall is a story with a new spin on the "Lost Princess" theme. While this theme has been done a lot, and is certainly not a new twist on a story, Michele Miller manages to put her own unique stamp on it with this book.

Skye is the female main character, and the above mentioned lost Princess. She was sent through a portal to Earth when she was a baby because she was prophesied about in her own kingdom. It was said that she would bring great prosperity and peace to her kingdom - so of course all of the greedy nobles and people who coveted the power that Skye would hold started raising armies and trying to gain the upper hand so that they could control her when she came of age. All of this happened when Skye was an infant, so she is unaware of any of it. Then her parents were murdered in a house fire by the bad guys when she was eight, and she spent the rest of her childhood and teen years alone and living in a group home for orphans. She has no memory of her past or her parents from before the fire. She has no idea who she is, or what kind of world she is really from. The only clue she has that something is not quite right are the recurring nightmares that she has about demons with red eyes. She deals with the nightmares and with her sadness and depression, that are caused by just not feeling like she belongs, by binge drinking until she blacks out. This is how she is introduced to us at the beginning of the story.

Then there is Xander. Xander is Skye's Guardian and has been assigned to watch her from afar and keep her from harm. He has been keeping guard over her for two years, but finally has to step in one night when she puts herself in danger by getting too drunk and passing out in a forest. Xander rescues her and brings her back to his hotel room. By revealing himself to her, he has put into motion the need to reveal to Skye the truth about who she really is, where she is really from, and why there are bad guys after her. I was really able to make a connection with Xander based on the feelings he has for Skye. He is really in an awkward position. He has fallen in love with Skye during the two years that he watched her. However, he is forbidden to have any kind of meaningful relationship with her since he is her guardian. When Skye develops feelings for him once she gets to know him, it makes for a very deliciously tangled storyline.

Speaking of tangled storylines, Michele Miller is a master at weaving secrets, suspense, and surprises in her story. There were several that I was able to predict were coming, and others that caught me totally by surprise. And Holy Mother of all Cliffhangers! Miller really wasn't pulling any punches when she wrote the ending of this book. She pretty much issued an ultimatum of "you will read my next book, or else!" (Or else, you will not get the closure or resolutions to this story that you are dying to know!!!) Luckily, I was already on board before I reached the end of this book - so other than a feeling of despair over having to wait until the next book comes out to find out what happens next - I can't wait to read the next one!

About the Author:
Having grown up in both the cold, quiet town of Topsham, Maine and the steamy, southern hospitality of Mobile, Alabama, Michele is something of a enigma.  She is an avid Yankees fan, loves New England, being outdoors and misses snow.  However she thinks southern boys are hotter, Alabama football is the only REAL football out there and sweet tea is the best thing this side of heaven and her children’s laughter!

Her family, a doting husband and three awesome  minions, have planted their roots in the middle of Michele’s two childhood homes in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Never Let You Fall is Michele’s first novel and she is beyond thrilled to have finally followed up on a dream she has held for over 20 years!  God willing there will be many many more books to follow.
