Heartless by Catou Martine
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book touched a chord within me that will have me thinking about it for a long time. This is a story about a young, fragile girl named Heather. She is poised on the brink of adulthood - she has moved to L.A. to live with her aunt and uncle before she begins college - but she is running from her tragic past, not able to move forward, and not able to forget. It seems that every way she turns there is a reminder in front of her that sends her spiraling back into the past. Then Josh enters her life. Josh seems like your typical fun-loving, laid back, California guy. He is super hot, and super fun, and lives a little on the wild side. He introduces himself to Heather by jumping into her parked convertible at a red light. She understandably freaks out and promptly deposits him in a parking lot and drives away. But Fate has plans for these two.
I liked the subtext going on in the background of the story dealing with religion. I have my own very strong feelings about organized religion, and while they aren't as extreme as some of what is depicted in this book, I can totally identify with the whole fanatic and hypocrisy theme. I like the idea of Fate, or luck, or whatever it is that brings two people together, and then they just have to try to make the best of what they have together and make it work. I was really surprised with the twist that happened later in the book concerning Josh and his past, but I liked how it all fit together. Maybe not completely believable in the real world, but totally worked in this book. I also liked that Heather and Josh didn't suffer from insta-love, or easily find their HEA. They had to work for it. They both suffered and grew in order to find their future together.
I'm glad the story ended up the way that it did. It wasn't an easy ending, but somehow it felt right. If anybody deserved some happiness at the end of their story, it was these two characters. This was the first book that I have read by Catou Martine, and I can honestly say that I am a fan. I can't wait to go read everything else that she has written. I highly recommend this book if you haven't read it!
Quotes that I liked:
"It was a twist of Fate that we met. I've been spinning ever since. Everything that came before got us to where we are now and all I want to do is keep spinning with you. That's what Fate is to me. It takes us where we need to go and then the rest is up to us."
"Maybe there's no such thing as Fate or the power of the stars or even a God. Maybe it's just us, and we managed to find each other. Because we had to, because we're nothing without each other. We're less. And our hearts need each other to heal, to love."
