Spotlight on: Fool's Game by Heather Huffman
Barnes and Noble
At the request of the U.S. Government, Caitlyn O’Rourke faked her death years ago, only to be reborn as the Cat—a deadly black-ops agent tasked with working for the shadowy organization Chameleon and doing the jobs that can’t be done in the light of day. Now, on the verge of taking down a notorious drug lord and rescuing a captured Chameleon agent, Cat is targeted for assassination…from within. But who’s making the call, and why? As she attempts to uncover answers and stay alive, Cat finds herself working alongside Cody Kingsley, the mysterious senator who broke her heart and betrayed her long ago. Along with an inner circle of fellow agents, Cat and Cody must untangle the web of lies that surrounds them before it’s too late. From the sultry streets of New Orleans to a secluded plantation in Ecuador to Washington, DC, Cat must elude an agent hell-bent on her destruction while figuring out how high up the ladder the conspiracy reaches. At the same time, she must work through her tumultuous and conflicting emotions where both Cody and fellow agent Galloway—who may or may not have her best interests at heart—are concerned. A thrill ride of emotions, suspense, and action, Fool’s Game intertwines matters of the heart and survival …and the only thing certain is that Cat will never be the same.
Fool's Game by Heather Huffman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This book was a great read! It is the first novel that I have read by Heather Huffman, and I have to say that it was very enjoyable.
Cat is a black-ops agent that works for the secret organization, Chameleon. She is a highly trained agent that tracks and takes down the baddest criminals in town. Things are going pretty well as she approaches a big bust on one of the most notorious drug dealers in town, but then Cat discovers that someone from inside of her agency has targeted her for assassination. When Cat starts digging and searching for answers to why she is being targeted, she is forced to work with Cody Kingsley, an ex-lover who betrayed her and broke her heart. As things heat up during Cat's search for answers, feelings resurface between Cat and Cody, and then turn into something more. Cat must fight for her life at the same time she is trying to figure out if what she feels for Cody is also worth fighting for.
With location changes from New Orleans to Ecuador to Washington D.C., Huffman keeps the action and suspense going from start to finish. This book has a very nice mix of action, suspense, romance, and humor. Not too much of one or the other. There were a couple of times that I was a little lost when it came to the history between Cat and Cody, and some of the other characters, because some of their stories were written in Huffman's other books that I haven't read, but it didn't take much for me to stay with the flow. The story was interesting enough that I stayed involved and wanted to figure out exactly what was going on.
Overall, I loved the characters - especially Cat - and the story kept me hooked. I love a fast-paced action adventure with a good romance thrown in, and this fit the bill perfectly. I will definitely be going out and reading Huffman's other books as soon as I get a chance.
