Author: S.E. Hall
Genre: Contemporary Romance, New Adult
Laney Walker is a quick witted, athletic, southern tomboy who lets few get too close, using her sarcastic zingers to deflect. She also has no idea how others view her, Evan having protected and coveted her since they were children. But college puts a gap between Laney and Evan that neither of them were prepared for- old relationships are tested, new ones are formed and nothing will ever be the same.
Especially when in walks one Dane Kendrick, not at all the familiar, southern charmer of home, but an animal all his own.
A story of growing up, friendship, loyalty, first love, primal love...and life.
Emerge by S.E. Hall
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I just loved this book! It was so well written, and the characters were so real they just jumped off of the page. And the emotion that S.E. Hall was able to pull from not only the character but the reader was amazing. I literally have no critiques for this book - it was that perfect!
Emerge is a story about friendship, first loves, and growing up. Laney and Evan have been best friends since they were little kids. They practically grew up together, spending every second at each others' sides. When they are high school seniors, fixing to graduate, Evan finally confesses his lifelong love of Laney, and their relationship changes. They are head over heels in love, and make the transition seamlessly from the best of friends to a couple. However, life throws a kink in their happily ever after when Evan is accepted to play football at the University of Georgia, and Laney never gets her acceptance letter. Instead, she accepts a scholarship to play softball at Southern University, which is 5 hours away from Evan. They go into college with eyes wide open - still loving each other but making the promise to just be friends until they figure everything out. They both know that there will be temptations in the form of horny college boys and girls, but both are secure in their love for each other. But Laney never planned on meeting someone like Dane. Laney has never paid attention to boys, never felt any sort of attraction to another guy besides Evan. So she is shocked and a little scared when she walks into a room and locks eyes with Dane and her whole world shifts. He ignites something within her that has been dormant, and she is irresistibly drawn to him. Thus begins the love triangle.
I have to say that this is one of the best and worst love triangles I have ever read about. It's the best because all of the parties involved are perfect for each other. Laney is so straightforward and honest without all of the typical girl drama. Evan is the ultimate best friend, but he also happens to be super hot and romantic and he loves Laney unconditionally. Dane is the mysterious other man - who also happens to be head over heels for Laney, and treats her like a real life princess. It's the worst because Laney's decision is impossible. How do you choose between the guy that you are crazy about who has been your best friend your whole life, and the new guy who is exciting and fun and lights up your whole world when he walks into a room? Someone is going to get hurt, really irreversibly bad, no matter who Laney chooses. And she's enough of a decent and caring person that it's killing her to know she's hurting either one of them.
All I'm saying is that I would never want to be in Laney's shoes. Usually there's one guy (or girl) in the love triangle that is obviously not the best choice. They have secrets, or they have done something to hurt someone, or they have SOME sort of flaw that should pull them out of the running. Neither Dane or Evan have any of this. They are both perfect - thus making Laney's decision impossible. I knew when I found myself rooting for both of them, and that I, as a reader, couldn't make my choice for who I preferred, that when she did make her choice it was going to be awful no matter who she chose. And it was. I'm happy with who Laney chooses, but I'm also heartbroken for the one she didn't.
Overall, I loved this book, and I can't wait to read book two in this series to see what happens to all of these amazing characters next.
