This book was perfect. It was the perfect end to the Spiral of Bliss series, and it was the perfect conclusion to Dean and Liv's story. I was sad to read the last page and realize that it was over, but it left me with a deeply satisfied feeling, and that doesn't happen often when a series comes to an end.
I want to first stress the point that this is book three in a trilogy, and that it is not a standalone! In order to fully appreciate everything about this book, and about Dean and Liv's journey, you have to read Arouse and Allure first.
While the first two books in this series were more about Dean and Liv's struggles to overcome several threats and obstacles that tested their marriage, Awaken was more about them finding themselves and learning to stand on their own two feet within their marriage. Dean is facing a personal and occupational threat that just might ruin his career. Liv is learning how to be her own person, and how to rely on herself to figure out what she wants to do with her life. Dean has always been their to support her, but in doing so she has never had the chance to fail on her own, and grow from it. It was truly a beautiful thing to watch Liv come into herself. She gains so much confidence and self worth, and the true shining moment for me was when she finally sets her mom straight. (A character that I truly despised btw.)
The story and the writing in this book was stellar. There was no doubt in my mind from page one to the last page that Dean and Liv are one of the most special couples that I have ever read about. Their deep abiding love for each other practically radiates from the pages. Not only do they love each other, but they also lust after each other, worship each other, cherish everything about the other person. A love that pure and that unbreakable is awe inspiring.
I did have one teeny tiny thing that bothered me a little bit, and I really can't believe I'm going to say this, but I have to be completely honest. There was actually a little too much sex in this book. I know, I know!!! How can there ever be too much sex when it comes to the sexy scholar Dean West?? But there were several times that I was actually skimming thru the sexy stuff to get back to the meat of the story. Don't get me wrong - the sex was hot and erotic and amazing, but they were going at it like bunnies on every other page it seemed! There were several scenes that I read and savored because it fit so seamlessly into the story, and really emphasized their bond and connection to each other, but other times it just seemed a little overkill. I still truly loved this book, and honestly I think it only frustrated me because I was so impatient to get back to everything else that was going on so that I could see what happened next.
Overall, I can't recommend this book (and this entire series) enough. These characters and their stories are special, and they will stay with you for a long, long time. Liv and Dean, Dean and Liv, the sexy professor and his beauty. *Sigh*
"My husband doesn't just love me. He knows HOW to love me. He knows what I need and when I need it, sometimes even better than I do. He knows how to unfold all the tight, tough parts of me and smooth them out with the glide of his hand. He knows how to prove that he - and only he - understands ever crevice of my soul. He knows how to remind me that I am forever safe within his heart."View all my reviews
Although she would go back for another degree if she could because she's that much of a bookworm, she now lives the happy life of a full-time writer. Nina's novel The Erotic Dark hit #1 on Amazon's Erotica Bestseller list, and Allure is a USA Today Bestseller.
